Celebrating Our 20th Anniversary
The year 2017 marks the 20th anniversary for Skate Great.
Skate Great Inc. is the largest Learn to Skate and Beginner Hockey program in Western New York. In 1997 founder Janice Smith set out with a vision to provide quality ice skating instruction for all ages and skill levels in the Buffalo area. Starting out with just a handful of coaches on staff and a half sheet of ice they began providing group lessons one day a week at Leisure Rinks. By fostering a team environment of dedicated and passionate coaches Janice was able to quickly expand Skate Great’s classes to include additional locations and days.
Although Janice passed away in 2010 her vision has been carried on by current Owner and Director, Jessica Roswell. There are now well over 1,500 people who pass through the program each year with 45 full-time/part-time coaches on staff. Skate Great now offers up to 21 different programs ranging from Baby Blades to Hockey Skills, 7 days a week in 5 locations, plus over 10 hours of skating school ice each week.
Owner and Director, Jessica Roswell remarked: “I am very proud of what Janice started and it is important to me that we continue to build off of her legacy. Our staff is passionate about teaching ice skating to all ages and demographics and I believe that passion, along with the personal connection we have with our skaters is what has allowed Skate Great to be so successful.”

Skate Great is the largest Learn to Skate and Beginner Hockey program in Western New York. They are among the top 5 largest programs in the entire USA and have been awarded for over 1,000 members from US Figure Skating every year for the past 12 years. Alumni include Team USA, USHL, NAHL and NCAA athletes. Skate Great prides themselves on teaching the skills required to take skaters from their first steps on the ice to the next level of the sport, “turning beginners into champions”.
